HAYLEY PETERS
I have always had the urge to design since a young age playing computer games designing homes for fictional families. Throughout all my levels of education I have carried the need to create with me. I have experience from my high school education in various types of art: freehand sketching and drawing, painting, ceramics, and photography, which has allowed me to excel in my post-secondary endeavors. I attended the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) before attending Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) in their Architectural Building and Technology program for 1 year where I was versed in some of the basics of architecture and drafting.
Outside (no pun intended) of school, I am constantly being inspired by what lies beyond my front door. Living in Vancouver, British Columbia, you will constantly find me taking full advantage of the beautiful natural world in which I live, and probably posting a photo of it after that day. Whether it be hiking any of our Northshore mountains, camping in Whistler, or just a jog around my neighborhood, outside has a huge influence on my life, translating directly into my designs. The experience of travel trumps any form of education you can be given. Getting outside and travelling where you come from will humble, educate, grow you more than any project or assignment a teacher will give.
KPU has taught me that design is a unique process, unlike any other type of art form. To design is to create a connection with a space, a person, or the environment. And this connection you can create allows you to influence how people see, feel, and experience the world in which they live. Looking at design as a superpower that can control this, is what inspires me to create beautiful, functional, and emotional spaces.
