Josep Lluis Sert

Montjuic, Barcelona, Catalonia

The Fundacio Joan Miro sits on Montjuic in the city of Barcelona. This museum is a tribute to the surrealist works of Catalan painter, sculptor and ceramicist, Joan Miro. The museum upon approach is a minimal, soft white building blending geometries with the exterior installations and greenery of the landscape. The interior showcases colourful abstract art of different mediums, and encourages a quiet atmosphere of artistic curiosity. After walking through the museum, we slowly migrated to the rooftop, where we found a space that was not at all about the art, but entirely about the architecture. The weather was warm, calm and perfect, and we sat there drawing the simple, yet complex geometries of Josep Lluis Sert's masterpiece. I left this experience not necessarily feeling inspired by what was inside, but by the simplicity and ambiance of a building designed to showcase art pieces, but in tern perfectly showcased itself; simple, elegant, and quietly unique.
